Rafael Nunes in the spotlight at the premiere of the ESART Saxophone Ensemble

In addition to playing pieces by Antonín Dvořák (Serenade, Op. 44) and Vincent d’Indy (Chanson et Danses), the ESART-IPCB Saxophone Ensemble concert, held on July 3 in the auditorium of the Castelo Branco Regional Conservatory (CRCB), included the premiere of Dimensions, by Rafael Nunes, a finalist in the Music – Instrument Variant (Accordion) degree course at the School of Applied Arts, in the class of Paulo Jorge Ferreira.

After the presentation, at the 17th Síntese – Contemporary Music Festival, of Fragmentos, dedicated to the Fragmentos Ensemble, in 2022 Nonsense, a work for accordion and electronics, won an award at the DME Festival’s Nano Músicos Eletroacústicos competition, and the young composer was also a laureate at the World Accordion Trophy and at two editions of Folefest.

With musical direction from conductor Carlos Canhoto, the ESART-IPCB Saxophone Ensemble gave its debut recital in 2023. Currently, the ensemble is made up of musicians David Felgueiras (soprano), Patrícia Lopes (soprano), Carolina Martins (alto), Daniela Calisto (alto), Paulo Pires (tenor), Raquel Alexandre (tenor), Cláudia Cruz (tenor) and Beatriz Pena (baritone), students at the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas, joined at this concert by Pedro Severino (alto) and Tomás Fialho (baritone), from the Escola Profissional do CRCB.
