ESART Electronic Music Ensemble: Trajectories
Dates
01/06/2025 and 04/06/2025
After visiting the library of the Serralves Museum in Porto, the ESART Electronic Music Ensemble (EME), a space for musical creation and experimentation with new languages, aesthetics and technologies through electronic and electroacoustic means, presented the concert “Trajetos” on June 4 in the auditorium of the Fábrica da Criatividade in Castelo Branco.
With artistic direction and production by Rui Dias, musical direction by Miguel Urbano, Álvaro Lopes, Luís Bittencourt and Rui Dias, and technical direction by Luís Marques, the show was put on by the second and third year students of the degree in Electronic Music and Music Production (MEPM).
The program included four conceptual explorations in the form of music and sound, which cross individual perspectives and voices in a common narrative space.
The new version of “Les Moutons de Panurge”, by composer Frederic Rzewski, uses sequencing and fragmentation techniques, exploring form and timbre, as well as the contrasts between the layers of sound added to the melodic line.
“Brincar é no Parque” challenges the concept of electricity in music and explores the reactions to the blackout that affected the Iberian Peninsula, in an arc that goes from introspection through the sounds of everyday life and initial urban silence, cut by the anxiety of the population, to a sense of harmony and a return to normality.
“O Vento”, a critique of humanity’s negative influence on the planet, is a journey in three movements, supported by popular Portuguese proverbs and through which there is a dialog and confrontation between man and nature.
Finally, “Lissajous” refers to the curves which, with their parameters modified, serve as graphic notation to obtain rhythm and melodic patterns. Assigned to different instruments, the three dimensions generate a continuous movement of monophonic and polyphonic patterns which, through sound synthesis, combine to form a complex plot.
