Calligraphy Workshop with João Aranda Brandão

On April 11, a calligraphy workshop was held in Room 222 of the IPCB School of Applied Arts, the Calligraphy Workshop led by João Aranda Brandão – graphic designer, professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon (FA-ULisboa) and co-founder of the project Typo. Graphicæ, specializing in experimental and editorial typographic practices.
With a professional career marked by research into typography, calligraphy and the history of graphic design, João Brandão has participated in various publications, exhibitions and interdisciplinary collaborations, and is also a member of the collective Atipo, which is dedicated to the dissemination and preservation of graphic culture.
During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of calligraphy and its applications in contemporary design, coming into contact with different styles and tools in a practical and immersive approach. Historical and contemporary examples were also presented, highlighting the relevance of calligraphy in today’s visual context.
The initiative, aimed at students in the fields of design and visual communication, was part of ESART’s training strategy to promote the intersection between artistic practice, design and research, providing learning experiences with leading professionals.
