V. Debut was born in France and studied Physics Engineering at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (Toulouse, 2001). He obtained an MSc in Applied Acoustics (Université du Maine, 2001) and a PhD in Acoustics while working at the Laboratoire de Mécanique et d'Acoustique (Aix-Marseille II, 2004). In 2006, he moved to Portugal and joined the Laboratório de Dinâmica Aplicada (Instituto Superior Técnico) as a researcher, and the Department of Musical Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa as an Adjunct Professor. His research focuses on understanding the physical phenomena that give rise to musical sounds, with an emphasis on physical modeling, sound synthesis, and optimization of musical instruments. Recently, he has been working in the field of Cultural Heritage. He has published over 80 articles in journals and conferences, and his work has been recognized with 5 awards. He has led 5 research projects as PI, 1 as co-PI, and was co-I in 6 other projects. Since 2017, he has been a researcher at the Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança, where he coordinates the Acoustics and Sound Studies group and is a member of the Board. Since 2020, he has been an Adjunct Professor at the Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco, teaching courses on Acoustics and Audio Technologies. In this role, he frequently collaborates with musical instrument builders and composers and has developed artistic activities as a musician (oboe, synthesizer) and mastering engineer.
