Oboist Tiago Coimbra, professor at the School of Applied Arts (ESART) of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco, launched his first solo album on 19 November at The Alchemist in Porto.
Available on digital platforms, OBOE + showcases original works by nine of today’s most relevant Portuguese composers, while encouraging new performers and creators to continue expanding the repertoire dedicated to this instrument.
On this album, which blends acoustic and electronic sounds and seeks to catalyse new languages for the oboe, the ESART professor worked with António Chagas Rosa, Carlos Caires, Cândido Lima, João Moreira, Fábio Chicotio, Sérgio Azevedo, Tiago Jesus, Mariana Vieira and Luís Carvalho.
Tiago Coimbra holds a PhD in Music from the University of Aveiro and is principal oboe with the Göttinger Symphony Orchestra and the Filarmonia das Beiras. Member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, he has collaborated as principal guest oboist with the MDR (Leipzig) and Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona) symphony orchestras, as well as the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Hanover State Orchestra and the Orchestra XXI.
The musician has also performed on stage with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Aargau and Yakutia Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the classical orchestras of Centro and Espinho. With the Málaga Philharmonic, he premiered Félix Turrión Eichler’s concerto for oboe and orchestra, Resilience.
Also a member of the Art’Ventus Quintet, with whom he produced the album Swiss Treasures, Tiago Coimbra recorded Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Oboe and Flute, K. 320, for Universal, a recording that was awarded a gold medal by the Mozartgemeinde in Vienna.
