The aim is to portray the plague of the present, not as a physical disease, but as a mental one. In the 14th century, the plague weakened people when it infected them. Similarly, this happens in today's society when there is a lack of knowledge, empathy, tolerance and humility. ‘The triumph of death with the dance of death’, in this 15th-century painting we can see the path to death represented, ‘As we are, so shall you be’, ‘And neither your strength nor your piety can provide escape’ were the underlying messages of this art. The characters portrayed in it are people with pride and power (‘Death is not interested in your worldly riches, it only wants lives’). Deep down, we are all the same, we have the same beginning and the same end, with or without possessions or social power. It seeks to criticise a society that feeds on the flaws and weaknesses of the system to ensure its survival and profit, perpetuating a cycle of inequality and indifference. The comparison between animals, such as pigeons, rats, snakes, crows and cockroaches, and human society is critical, using undesirable characteristics as a metaphor to reflect negative aspects of social behaviour.
