Miguel Nuno Marques Carvalhinho is a Tenured Adjunct Professor of Classical Guitar at the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco. With extensive experience in teaching and musical performance, he has dedicated his career to the technical refinement and promotion of classical guitar and the Viola Beiroa, both nationally and internationally.
He holds a PhD from the Interfaculty Music Department of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2023) and from the Department of Didactics of Musical, Plastic, and Corporal Expression at the Universidad de Extremadura (2011), both awarded with the distinction Sobresaliente a la Unanimidad cum Laude. He also completed a “Diploma de Estudios Avanzados” with a Sobresaliente classification at the Universidad de Extremadura (2006). His education further includes the recognition of French qualifications at a bachelor’s degree level by the University of Aveiro (1999), a Perfectionnement Diploma from the Conservatoire National de Région d’Aubervilliers – La Courneuve (1996), and an Advanced Classical Guitar Course under the guidance of Alberto Ponce at the Conservatoire d’Aubervilliers - La Courneuve (1995).
With a distinguished career in the direction and coordination of artistic and educational projects, Miguel Carvalhinho was the founder and artistic director of Grupo Chapéu Preto (1994-1997) and the Festival de Alpedrinha (2000-2007), as well as the founder and pedagogical director of Casa das Artes – Conservatório Regional de Música da Golegã (2001-2002). Between 2013 and 2020, he coordinated and directed projects aimed at reviving the Viola Beiroa, while also serving as President of the Technical-Scientific Council of ESART-IPCB (2016-2020).
He has taught at various vocational and higher education institutions, including Externato Capitão Santiago de Carvalho, Conservatório Regional de Castelo Branco, Escola de Música do Choral Phydellius de Torres Novas, Academia de Música de Tomar, and Escola Profissional de Artes da Beira Interior, among others. Since 2003, he has been an adjunct professor of guitar at the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas of the IPCB.
Miguel Carvalhinho has a well-established career as a concert performer, having performed solo and in chamber music ensembles in countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, São Tomé and Príncipe, the United States, and Canada. He has collaborated with numerous renowned musicians and groups, including Custódio Castelo, Cristina Branco, and the Moscow Piano Quartet.
His media presence includes appearances on networks such as RTP, SIC, TVI, France 3, Mezzo, Antena 1, and Antena 2. In the recording industry, he has contributed to various projects, including Viola Beiroa, Espiral (solo guitar – Universal Emarcy), Canção para Carlos Paredes (with Luísa Amaro), A Voz das Cerejas (with Custódio Castelo and Margarida Guerreiro), Post-Scriptum (Cristina Branco), among others.
His professional journey reflects a deep commitment to teaching, performance, and the promotion of classical guitar and Portuguese musical heritage.
