Mariana Costa, who is studying for a master’s degree in Music Teaching at the School of Applied Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco, in the violin class of professors Augusto Trindade, Alexandra Trindade, Nuno Vasconcelos and Tiago Santos, was selected to occupy the position of section leader in the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (OJM).

The concerts took place between 5 and 24 July at the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Vauvenargues, France. The internship was attended by musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra, who mentored the young instrumentalists. Under the direction of conductor Evan Rogister, works such as Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major Titan and Richard Wagner’s The Mastersingers of Nuremberg Overture were performed.

As part of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the OJM brings together more than a hundred young talents from higher education institutions and cultural centres across the Mediterranean basin every year, offering them a unique platform for exchange and artistic development through masterclasses. Since its creation in 1984, this ensemble has challenged the conventional limits of the orchestra by combining cultural heritage, collective compositions, improvisations, history and symphonic compositions.
