João Pedro Pita Nunes, a first-year student on the Master’s degree programme in Music Education at the School of Applied Arts (ESART) of the Castelo Branco Polytechnic (IPCB), won first place at the 29th National Accordion Trophy, in the Senior Concert category.

The student, who is a member of Professor Carisa Marcelino’s class at ESART-IPCB, also took second place in the Vitorino Matono Prize category and fourth place in the 10th International Accordion Competition.

These honours were achieved as part of the 29th International Accordion Week, held between 16 and 24 May. Organised by the Portuguese Accordion Association, the Alcobaça Traditional Orchestra and Choir, and the local council, the event brings together some of the best young Portuguese and international accordionists every year.

In addition to the competitions, which featured 26 categories, 99 entrants and around 120 performances, the initiative also included concerts, alongside various masterclasses led by teachers.
