João José Serra Machado was born in Pesinho, Fundão (Portugal).
He teaches at the School of Applied Arts of the Castelo Branco Polytechnic Institute. He has a degree in Portuguese/French from the Castelo Branco School of Education, a Master's in French Literature from the University of Coimbra and a PhD in Literature from the University of Beira Interior (Covilhã), as well as a post-doctorate from the University of Minho
He has been teaching in higher education for over 25 years, most notably supervising the Pedagogical Practice of French Teachers, as well as teaching various subjects in Portuguese and French in different schools and courses (Portuguese and French Teacher Training, Translation and International Relations, Languages and Secretarial Work, Hotel Management, Fashion and Textile Design, Communication and Audiovisual Design, Interior and Equipment Design, Music, Lyrical Singing). She has played an active role in establishing Erasmus protocols with universities in Spain, France, Turkey and Romania, where she has taught classes in her area of specialisation to undergraduate and master's degree students.
In terms of research, she regularly participates in congresses and lectures at home and abroad, and has published several articles on reading and literacies in magazines and books in Portugal and Spain.
