On 3 October, the master’s student from the School of Applied Arts will present her collection ‘Armar a Tenda’ at Pátio da Galé. Produced using recycled materials, the six pieces that will be shown at the 65th edition of ModaLisboa, as part of the Sangue Novo competition, will be accompanied by a musical composition by her colleague Luís Pacheco.

On 3 October, starting at 6 pm, Pátio da Galé will serve as the stage for Inês Almeida and eight other new talents in fashion design, from among whom the finalists of the Sangue Novo competition, part of ModaLisboa|Lisbon Fashion Week, will be chosen.

Mainly interested in fashion production, jewellery and conceptual design of clothing and accessories, the 26-year-old from Porto is currently in her second year of a master’s degree in Fashion Design at the School of Applied Arts (ESART) of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB).

After her internship, an Erasmus exchange at the Faculty of Design in Ljubljana (Slovenia), with a coordinated collection based on fillings and duvets, the student’s portfolio debuted with the clothing collection and accessory line ‘Sair da Casca’ (Break Out of Your Shell), her final degree project. A satire on the permanent discontent and uncertainty of Portuguese society inspired by the 25th of April, the Portuguese Surrealist movement and the magazines Orpheu and Portugal Futurista.

In the capital, Inês Almeida is now preparing to present the collection ‘Armar a Tenda’, consisting of six outfits – two making their debut and four already shown at the ESART Moda fashion show. Reused materials such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets and sheets, but also scarves, shawls and even aluminium-based thermal insulation give shape to the proposal in which the designer favours the connection between shapes and patterns, and whose theme is the misinformation that inflames public opinion.

From the social and political consequences of fake news and distorted perspectives, the reflection extends to the harsher realities of city life, such as homelessness. On the catwalk, she once again features a composition by Luís Pacheco, a second-year student from the Azores studying for a degree in Music – Electronic Music and Music Production, also at ESART-IPCB, in which he once again explores the noises that refer to the unwanted and ignored elements of the urban landscape.

With a mission to discover and promote young talent, as well as contribute to the development of national designer fashion, the 65th edition of ModaLisboa takes place between 1 and 5 October, bringing together fashion shows, conferences, workshops, mentoring and exhibitions in an event aimed mainly at a professional audience.

In recent years, the regular participation of ESART-IPCB students in Lisbon Fashion Week has extended to Sangue Novo, a platform for experimenting with ideas and developing new languages, culminating in the ModaLisboa x IED Award (master’s programmes in fashion design or fashion marketing at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome and Milan) and the ModaLisboa x Burel Factory Award (creative residency with technical support from the brand). Both awards also include two scholarships, ensuring the winners’ representation at Showpress.
