The Square: movement and drama workshop
On 12 June, from 7.00 pm, the Singing specialisation of the Bachelor’s degree in Music at the School of Applied Arts of the Castelo Branco Polytechnic will host the workshop “A Praça” at the Fábrica da Criatividade.
The initiative, organised as part of the Movement and Drama module led by lecturer Ana Reis, features the participation of students Alexandra Barros, Alexandre Murraças, Ana Marta Fresco, Carolina Raimundo, Eduarda Dias, Gonçalo Rodrigues, Margarida Ribeiro, Matilde Sousa, Rodrigo Morais and Sofia Amorim.
“The ‘praça’ (square) is the place where the world intersects and is forgotten. Amidst the rubbish that bears witness to the neglect of public space and the hurried footsteps of strangers lies a living archive of anonymous stories. When opera takes over this dilapidated space, driven by the urgency of singing students as part of the Movement and Drama module, a rescue operation takes place. The contrast between the visible filth, the dramatic expression of the bodies and the sublimity of the voices proves that the collective space is not dead; it is merely forgotten. This artistic youth transforms rubbish into a stage and noise into listening, showing that beauty has the political and poetic power to regenerate places. The true impact of this action lies in the transformation of the gaze of those passing by. By combining technical vocal rigour with the scenic and physical narrative developed in the discipline, the students break the indifference of routine and create an invisible common ground. Strangers who previously ignored one another now share the same moment of wonder. The promise of the future held by those voices and gestures heals the abandonment of the space by rebuilding, right there, the community.”
