MUSTALKS: Performance anxiety and stage fright
As part of MUSTALKS, a series of talks on music, the School of Applied Arts (ESART) of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB) is promoting the seminar ‘Performance anxiety and stage fright: mind and body control for peak performance’ on 10 March 2026, starting at 5 pm, in auditorium 1 of ESART-IPCB, the seminar ‘Performance anxiety and stage fright: mind and body control for peak performance’, led by João Pedro Delgado, guest professor at ESART-IPCB and researcher at CESEM – Centre for Music Studies (Universidade Nova de Lisboa).
Based on existing literature, the seminar will address scientific knowledge about performance anxiety and stage fright, as well as their physiological causes, a set of study methodologies, and practical, tested and systematised work processes that enable performers to overcome the technical and interpretative limitations caused by this condition.
The ESART-IPCB lecturer frequently plays with chamber music ensembles and is one of Portugal’s leading promoters of the viola as a solo instrument. A member of the João Roiz Ensemble, the violist was artistic director of the Belgais Centre for the Study of the Arts and its choir, as well as the author of several programmes on Antena 2. With a PhD in Music and Musicology – Performance (viola) and a Master’s in Music – Performance (viola), João Delgado’s scientific interests focus on the history of the viola in Portugal, performance studies and applied aesthetics.
