Chalumeau Quartet concert

On March 18, starting at 9:00 p.m., the auditorium of the School of Education at the Castelo Branco Polytechnic (IPCB) will host a concert by the Chalumeau Quartet.

Formed in 2024 as part of the Chamber Music course within the Bachelor of Music program, the group consists of clarinetists Matilde Augusto, Patrícia Franco, Raquel Costa and Sofia Sequeira. Under the artistic guidance of Professor Pedro Ladeira, the quartet, which emerged at the School of Applied Arts (ESART) of the IPCB, is dedicated to exploring the repertoire for this ensemble, seeking to reconcile technical rigor with its own interpretive identity.

With free admission, the event is part of the activities of the Casa do Pessoal do IPCB (IPCB Staff House) scheduled for March and April.

Popular in Baroque music between the 17th and 18th centuries, the chalumeau is a traditional French reed wind instrument, considered one of the precursors of the modern clarinet. Its characteristic velvety sound gave its name to the low register of its successor, which has a greater range and a more expressive timbre.
