Baroque Guitar Recital

Tiago Matias

While working on his solo disc Cifras de Viola (Arte das Musas, 2021), with repertoire from Manuscrito Musical 97 from the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, Tiago Matias met and recorded two works by José Ferreira Cordovil. This codex, with 267 works for viola (baroque guitar), is the most extensive of the Iberian documents known for the instrument. Motivated by the quality of Cordovil’s work and by reading the academic works that referred to it – especially João Pedro Vasconcelos Duarte’s dissertation (Universidade Nova, 2004), which already suggests that there may be more repertoire by José Ferreira Cordovil – he set out on a path of musicological research into the composer’s life and work.
