Amidst references to the municipality’s cultural, historical and natural heritage, the Portuguese guitar and the course programme offered by the School of Applied Arts (ESART) at the Castelo Branco Polytechnic (IPCB) relating to this stringed instrument served as the central theme for the debut episode of 5.º Elemento, broadcast on 25 July on TVI’s Jornal Nacional.

In this series of reports featured in the Queluz-based television channel’s Saturday evening news programme, journalist Joaquim Franco and camera operator Nuno Bayer set out to discover the special element that invites viewers to get to know a region and its people, thereby seeking to highlight what makes each region unique.

As well as presenting different versions of the musical instrument, in a conversation with the host of the general-interest channel – recorded at ESART-IPCB – Custódio Castelo, the ‘father’ of the specialisation in Portuguese guitar within the Bachelor’s degree in Music (Instrumental Specialisation) and the Master’s degree in Music, discusses the purpose and impact of these courses, highlighting the dynamics created in the city by the students.
