He began his advanced studies at the Royal College of Music in London where he received various prizes and commendations in viola and chamber music. He studied privately with Peter Schidlof of the Amadeus Quartet and participated in the IMS (International Musicians Seminar) in Cornwall, receiving tuition from Gyorgy Sebok in chamber music and viola from Peter Schidlof. There then followed an intense freelance career, playing in most of the London orchestras and recording for radio, gramophone, and television in innumerable events. David Lloyd was a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra during four years as violist and during that time was considered for the position of Sub Principal viola – as well as being considered for principal of the Northern Sinfonia and BBC Radio Orchestra. He was also the Principal Viola of the New London Orchestra, making several CDs. He arrived in Portugal as the Principal Viola of the then Orquestra do Porto (Regie Sinfonia cooperativa) and shortly afterwards developed a teaching career, initially in the professional schools of Artave and Mirandela. Since 1996 he is a lecturer at the University of Aveiro in the music department (DeCA) lecturing in violin, viola, chamber music, orchestra, and theoretical disciplines. In 2018 he began his duties at the Polytechnic of Castelo Branco (IPB) at the Superior School of Applied Arts (Esart) lecturing in viola and chamber music. He started conducting at the University of Aveiro in 2001 and since then has worked with various orchestras and groups within and without Portugal, principally England and the United States of America. In parallel he has developed a career with chamber music ensembles, mostly string quartets. He was a member of the Porto Quartet as violinist, making a CD of the music of Cláudio Carneyro and the Lyra Quarteto as violist, recording the Luiz Freitas Branco quartet on the Numérica label. He has worked with the Camões Quartet as violist and is a member of the Costa Atlântic Quartet as violinist. The subject of his Doctoral thesis is about the interpretation of tango and in parallel with this research he has played with two tango groups – “Portotango Ensamble” with whom he recorded two CDs “Sur” and “Sin Esquinas”. The other group is “La Ideal” which specializes in Milongas, Tango Shows and events of a live nature. David Lloyd has also recorded and performed and arranged for artists such as Pedro Abrunhosa, Miguel Araújo, António Zambujo, Quinta do Bill, Ez Special and Cazino. During this period, he was also given the title “Honorary Maestro for life of the National Orchestra of Cape Verde” for his work there in collaboration with the Ex Minister of Culture, Mário Lúcio. David Lloyd received a commission from the orchestra to compose a suite for orchestra in four movements incorporating elements of tango and Portuguese Fado “TangoFado Suite” which was premiered in October 2019. During his tenure as Maestro, he made over 300 arrangements for the orchestra, most of them for free. In 2020 during the pandemic, he recorded the three violin sonatas of Edvard Grieg with Bernardo Santos on piano for Da Vinci Publishing, based in Tokyo, Japan. Later on, they made recitals with programme for Portuguese radio in Lisbon and other venues. He also is the principal 2nd violin in the Atlantic Coast Orchestra and Principal Viola in the Portuguese Philharmonic.
