António Carrilho

António Carrilho is simultaneously a virtuoso performer on recorders from the Medieval period to modern instruments, a sought-after teacher and chamber coach, and a conductor.
He has appeared as soloist in Portugal with the Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitana Orchestra, the Póvoa de Varzim Symphony, and the Orchestra of Cascais and Oeiras; with the new-music ensemble OrchestrUtópica, and with prominent period-instrument ensembles, including Divino Sospiro, La Nave Va, La Paix du Parnasse and Os Músicos do Tejo. Internationally, he has also performed with the Baroque Orchestra of Nagoya (Japan), Baroque Orchestra of Amazonia ( Brasil) and the Concerto Balabile (The Netherlands). He was a prize winner in the Moeck Solo Recorder Competition in the UK in 2001 and at the Solo Recorder Competition of Haifa in Israel in 1999. In addition he earned prizes for best interpretation of works from the 17th and 20th Centuries along with the audience prize at other international competitions.
As a conductor he has directed cantatas by Bach and Telemann, and the operas “Dido and Aeneas” and “The Fairy Queen” of Purcell, “La Descent d’Orphée aux Enfers” of Charpentier, “La Serva Padrona” of Pergolesi, “La Dirindina” of Scarlatti, “Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse” of Boismortier, “Venus and Adonis” of John Blow, “Arlechinatta” of Salieri, “Orfeo” of Monteverdi and “Orfeo e Eurydice” of Gluck. He directed the premiere of “Cortes de Jupiter” with text by Gil Vicente and music by Filipe Raposo, in partnership with the Portuguese Opera Laboratory and created by the Belém Cultural Center in partnership with CESEM and APARM.
A devoted proponent of contemporary music for recorder, he has premiered innumerable works as a soloist, in chamber music or as a soloist with orchestra.
Mr. Carrilho is artistic and musical director of La Nave Va, as well as musical director of La Paix du Parnasse (Spain) - member of the association ”Grupos Españoles de Música Antiga” and is part of the Syrinx groups : XXII - member of the association “Chamber Music America "; Syrinxello; Borealis Ensemble. He has performed in important music festivals throughout Europe, America, Oceania and Asia.
Mr. Carrilho has recorded on the Naxos, Encherialis, Numérica, Musik Fabrik labels, as well as for the Cultural Ministry of Amazonia (Brazil), Arte (France), Public Television and the Arts Ministry/ Movement for Musical Patrimony of Portugal, from early repertoire to XXI century music. He will record a solo Bach recital for Codax, with works transcribed and adapted by himself with the support of GDA (apoio à Edição Fonográfica de Interprete) e pela Fundação da Casa de Mateus.
Mr. Carrilho is co-organizer of the International Early Music Summer courses of Casa de Mateus in Portugal and has also taught classes and seminars in The Netherlands, in Spain, in Germany, in The United States of America, in Italy, in India, in Japan, in Brazil and in Australia. Along with his global performances and masterclasses Mr. Carrilho is also on faculty in his native Portugal at ESART, the Superior School of Applied Arts where he teaches both recorder and
chamber music.
