Created in 2019 at the School of Applied Arts (ESART) of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB), under the artistic guidance of Professor Paulo Jorge Ferreira, the Lontano Trio currently consists of Clara Gonçalves (saxophones), Francisco Martins (accordion) and Pedro Vasquinho (double bass).

The contemporary music ensemble, which stands out for its rich timbre and unconventional formation, regularly collaborates with Portuguese composers, presenting an original repertoire. With performances at renowned venues such as the Sala da Música and the National Museum of Ancient Art, in 2020 and 2021 the group was awarded two consecutive second places in the Folefest competition, in the advanced chamber music category.

In 2026, the Lontano Trio presents Do Barro ao Som – Homenagem a Cargaleiro (‘From Clay to Sound – Tribute to Cargaleiro’). The concert series, a posthumous tribute to the artist from Vila Velha de Ródão, kicked off on 7 February at the Castelo Branco Contemporary Culture Centre, following a rehearsal open to the public at the Cargaleiro Museum.

The project brings together unpublished works, most of which are being performed for the first time: Litografias (Ana Roque Antunes), In Memoriam Manuel Cargaleiro (Gonçalo d’Alcântara Lourenço), Le Départ de L’Ombre (Sara Carvalho), Mural (Tiago de Sousa Derriça) and 7 Danças para Cargaleiro: Con spirito, Con fuoco, Lontano, Segreto, Lento ma impulsivo, Vivo, Spiritoso (Carlos Marecos).

To this end, the authors drew inspiration from the compositional processes (repetition and variation, structure and deviation, juxtaposition and displacement), visual language and artistic universe of the painter and ceramist from Beira Baixa.
