Coimbra hosts the documentary Amato Lusitano – Science and Humanism
The Penedo da Saudade Cultural Centre, at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC), will host this Friday, 14 November, at 6:00 p.m., the screening of the documentary “Amato Lusitano – Science and Humanism”. The session, with free admission, is part of the programme “IN THE NAME OF BEIRA = COIMBRA 2025”, produced by Alma Azul.
This 2025 production, developed within the TECHN&ART – Centre for Technology, Restoration and Valorisation of the Arts (Polytechnic Institutes of Tomar and Castelo Branco), is directed by Carlos Reis, Isabel Marcos and Neel Naik.
The film revisits the life and remarkable legacy of Amato Lusitano (1511–1568), a physician and humanist born in Castelo Branco, highlighting his pioneering medical contributions, his journey through exile and religious persecution, and the enduring impact of his ethical “Oath”, which continues to inspire generations of healthcare professionals.
After the screening, the production team — Fátima Regina Jorge, Ana Sofia Marcelo, Carlos Reis, Isabel Marcos and Neel Naik — will engage in a Q&A session with the audience.
The “IN THE NAME OF BEIRA = COIMBRA 2025” initiative strengthens the cultural and scientific ties of the region, with the support of the Municipality of Castelo Branco, the CIMBB (Beira Baixa Intermunicipal Community) and the Penedo da Saudade Cultural Centre (IPC).
