Miguel Rocha, winner of the 1st Prize in “Virtuosité” in Lausanne and the Concours International de Musique UFAM, is a versatile and accomplished musician, actively performing as a soloist across various musical styles and periods, having recorded 15 CDs. A passionate advocate of contemporary and Baroque music, with a particular interest in works by Portuguese composers, he stands out as both a chamber musician and educator.
Since 1993, he has been a member of Duo Contracello, with which he has recorded numerous CDs. Additionally, with Trio Athena, he recorded a CD in France featuring the trios of Debussy and Beethoven. On the Baroque cello, with the Avondano Ensemble, he contributed to the edition and recording of previously unpublished 18th-century Portuguese repertoire—one album featuring four sonatas and two duos by João Baptista A. Avondano, played on the Stradivarius cello King of Portugal, and another featuring the trio sonatas of Pedro António Avondano, performed on an 18th-century Galrão cello.
Recently, he recorded two CDs: Guillaume Lekeu – Music for Violin, Cello and Piano and Ernest Chausson/Eugène Ysaÿe – Music for Violin, Cello and Piano, the latter highlighted by Radio France/France Musique in 2022 and awarded Le Clic, the highest distinction from Classique News in Paris.
Currently, he is Coordinating Professor of Cello at the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas de Castelo Branco (ESART) and is frequently invited to teach masterclasses both nationally and internationally.
